2:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve ServicesFamily-Friendly Sock Puppet Christmas Story
Our 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. services are joyful, playful, and perfect for families, children, and anyone who delights in a little holy chaos. These services feature “The Story We Tell Together,” an interactive Christmas Eve sock puppet play where children choose a puppet when they arrive—Marys, Josephs, sheep, angels, stars, wise ones, Herod, and more.
The story unfolds with the whole congregation invited to help bring the nativity to life. Children remain in the sanctuary for the entire service, and adults are encouraged to join in the wonder and laughter. Classic carols are woven throughout, and the message is simple and clear: there is room for everyone in God’s story.
These services include an offering, candlelighting during Silent Night, and end with Joy to the World. Communion is not served at these hours, keeping the service shorter and especially accessible for families with young children.
If you’re looking for a creative, welcoming, child-centered celebration, the 2:00 and 4:00 services are a beautiful fit.
6:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Services
Traditional Candlelight & Communion
Our 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. services offer a more traditional Christmas Eve experience—still warm, inclusive, and deeply rooted in Highlands’ progressive spirit. These services feature beloved carols, Scripture, a choir anthem, and special music including O Holy Night. The Christ candle is lit, the story from Isaiah is read, and the message centers on the God who comes close to us in vulnerability, hope, and love.
These evening services include Holy Communion, open to all without exception. We serve hypoallergenic bread and a small cup of juice, and communion may be brought to your seat.
The service culminates in the sanctuary glowing with candlelight as we sing Silent Night, followed by the joyful proclamation of Joy to the World.
If you’re longing for a reverent, beautiful, candlelit celebration with the sacrament of communion, the 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. services offer a meaningful way to welcome Christ’s light.
