This time we’re on the Dunes Wetlands section of the Trail, walking from Spencer Park to Broadhaven Reserve.
Our walk will begin at Spencer Park, following the Southern Pegasus Bay Track, along the eastern edge of Bottle Lake Forest Park. There are many botanical delights under the pine trees (a badge for the first orchid spotter?). We also head over the dunes and down onto the beach along the way for a bit of beach-combing and long vistas of Pegasus Bay. We’ll walk past Waitākiri/Bottle Lake, surrounded by native plants and home to waterfowl. Finally we ascend Bottle Lake Hill (playfully dubbed Maunga Ataahua), a great viewpoint, before walking down to Broadhaven Reserve.
The walk is FREE and, as in the past, members are welcome to bring a friend or two. Please circulate this invitation to your friends and family.
Walk arrangements are as follows:
· Date: Sunday, November 30th 2025
· Meet/park: 9.15 am at Broadhaven Reserve (corner of Bower Ave & Aston Drive), where we will organise drivers/vehicles to transport walkers to the starting point at Spencer Park. DON’T LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN CARS!
· Walk starts: 9.45 am
· Route: Mostly flat walking along gravelly and/or sandy tracks, with some small ups and downs. Under the shade of the trees for the first half of the walk – second half a bit more exposed. Bring water/nibbles and sunhat / sunscreen. Toilets are at the beginning and end (Spencer Park and Broadhaven).
· During the walk, our leaders (and you) will share thoughts on the natural and cultural history.
· Duration: 2.5-3 hours walking (including stops). The route is 6-7 kilometres. We’ll arrive at Broadhaven by 1pm, and carpool from there back to Spencer Park.
