About this Event
In honor of Black History Month, the Senior Choristers are showcasing the works of trailblazing Black composers. The service features Wayne Marshall’s 1982 setting of Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in C, composed during his tenure as Organ Scholar at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Marshall’s work seamlessly blends sophisticated jazz harmonies with traditional structures, securing its reputation as a modern staple of the Anglican choral repertoire.
The celebration continues with the soulful African American Spiritual “I want Jesus to walk with me” and organ voluntaries by the pioneering Florence Price. In 1932, Price made history as the first Black female composer to win the prestigious Wanamaker Composition Competition, and her music remains a testament to her extraordinary legacy.
