CHOIRS, COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION: Our Stories

Vancouver Playback Theatre (VPT) presents a very unique kind of theatre: they tell your stories.
About this Event

On this interactive evening, you will share your thoughts and experiences on the powerful communitarian bonds that happen when we sing together in choirs. The actors of VPT will alchemize these anecdotes and ideas into scenes that universalize them, and give them depth and emotional impact.

Ticketing and Bursary

This will be a ticketed event, with tickets charged at $20 or $15, depending on the financial circumstances and generosity of each audience member. (This is yet another aspect of participation and interactivity on this special evening!). As always, anyone who doesn’t have the means to attend is welcome to simply ask by emailing [email protected] for a promo code covered by the Notional Space Bursary.

This fund, compiled by friends of Notional Space, is designed to strengthen community by guaranteeing the magic of live performance is available to all, while at the same time ensuring that the artists who present here do not bear the financial cost of our inclusivity.
VPT is generously donating a portion of the proceeds of its perfomance on this evening to support the Notional Space Bursary fund.
About Vancouver Playback Theatre

Since its inception in 1975, Playback Theatre has grown to more than 150 troupes in over 30 countries around the world, encompassing a variety of different languages and cultures. It has been used in many challenging contexts, including bullying in schools, cross-cultural disputes, and political and religious conflicts.

Vancouver Playback Theatre (VPT) uses interactive improvisational theatre and facilitated dialogue to build connections and community among audience members on a variety of topics of importance to
them. During VPT events, we use music, movement, and dialogue to reenact memorable moments from participants’ lives, highlighting specific details unique to an individual, while also drawing out underlying common themes that can resonate with other audience members. In this way, Playback Theatre helps people connect with others, generating a feeling that “we’re all in this together.”

VPT events can also be an opportunity to explore diverse viewpoints on “hot topics”. Through the sharing and re-enactment of personal experiences, VPT facilitates opportunities to build understanding of each other’s perspectives, mutual learning, and respect for differences. We also hold events that focus on the sharing of thoughts, ideas, and resources to empower participants to take individual and collective action to address an issue of importance to them and their communities.

VPT was created in 1999, and since then, we’ve connected and empowered a variety of individuals, communities, and organizations in deep and powerful ways. We have worked with many community groups (e.g., seniors, youth), immigration and settlement organizations, faith-based groups, human rights organizations, educational institutions, volunteer organizations, and private sector companies. The themes of our events have been wide ranging, including celebrating community achievements, honouring volunteer work, exploring the meaning of belonging, sharing perspectives on inter-faith relationships, and examining the opportunities and challenges of building more welcoming and inclusive schools and communities.
