Why and how is China investing in development aid? Is Chinese aid distinct or special? How does China act within the international development system and to what effect? To find out, join our book event and discussion. At a time when many countries are scaling back their development aid and the multilateral system is facing serious disruption, Chinese development assistance and positioning in international organizations may matter more.
In the newly published book, Chinese Development Aid and Africa: What, How and Why, researchers from CMI, NUPI and other partners investigate particular developments concerning Chinese aid, in Africa and in connection to the international aid architecture and the UN development system.
While debunking some of the stereotypes associated with Chinese aid still, the authors point to both lasting and emerging achievements and challenges surrounding China’s development assistance and the role it plays in the international system.
We pick up central findings from the book and discuss them with consideration to current changes happening around aid and multilateralism more generally. We include questions that address Chinese development contributions in connection to financing and lending, education and job training, peace and security, technology and digitalization and other issues.
Participants are Hans Jørgen Gåsemyr (Senior Research Fellow, NUPI), Elling N. Tjønneland (Senior Researcher, CMI), Lovise Aalen (Research Professor, CMI) and Xuefei Shi (Affiliated Researcher, CMI).
The event marks the finalization of joint activities connected to a project on Chinese aid (led by CMI) and ongoing research connected to the project “China and Evolving Multilateral Craftmanship in the Age of Digitalization” (led by NUPI), both financed by the Research Council of Norway.
