We will take you off the beaten trail and bring you inside equatorial wilderness as we search for gorillas, trek through the Congo jungle in National Park, and take in the views from relaxing island lodge on Lake Kivu. This version of our Congo adventure does not include the hike up the volcano.Accompanied by Park Rangers we will traverse through the jungle to home of mountain gorillas. The length of the trek is entirely dependent on the gorillas, sometimes the guides can track them down in less than two hours, other times it takes much longer. Mountain gorillas are nomadic, travelling in families and staying in an area just long enough to clear it of food. They also don’t follow a clear path, you’ll realise when tracking them, they like to meander. On your first sighting, you may see mothers holding their babies, juvenile gorillas playing, or dominant silverbacks keeping an eye out for their family!
Moreover, we will find out why the locals call Tchegera the island of paradise, with the option to enjoy the lake with canoe, snorkel and paddleboard or simply take in the views of surrounding mountains. If we’re lucky, on a clear night you can see the glow of several nearby volcanoes!
Definitely a trip on the wild side with more relaxed approach to seek out gorillas in their habitat and enjoy pristine jungle in the heart of Africa!

DAY 1// TOUCHDOWN RWANDA, KIGALI – DRC, BUKAVU CITY
Welcome to Africa! Landing in Kigali we head straight to its western Cyangungu-Rusizi border for a cross over into the DRC. After border formalities we’ll head to our hotel in Bukavu City, one of the DRC’s most populated. We’ll not hesitate check the key spots. Overnight in Bukavu.
DAY 2// LOWLAND GORRILAS TREK
Congo coffee and fufu breakfast before we set out to the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising a vast area of primary tropical forest dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega. The park is also home to one of the last remaining groups of eastern lowland gorillas – consisting of only around 250 individuals. Following a short briefing, we will begin the journey of a lifetime along narrow jungle paths to meet the largest of the four gorilla subspecies. Overnight in Bukavu.
DAY 3//GOMA-TCHEGERA ISLAND
Have an early breakfast in the morning, then be transferred to the harbor. Take the Ihusi speedboat to Goma; Arrival in Goma around 11:00am. From the harbor, the Virunga national park vehicle will take you to the ICCN port where you’ll embark in a boat to Tchegera Island. Arrival on the Island around 12:00pm. You’ll be able to relax and enjoy the tranquility of Lake Kivu and its myriad of bird species. Activities on the island include kayaking, paddleboarding, nature walk and snorkeling. DAY 4 // TCHEGERA TO KIGALI
Have a relaxed breakfast on the island. At 10:00am, transfer back to Goma, visit to an orphanage. Cross the border and return to Rwanda. Have a stopover in Musanze. Visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village that offers visitors the opportunity to learn about Rwanda’s culture, traditions and history. After that, have lunch then proceed to Kigali. Overnight in Kigali.
DAY 5 // KIGALI
City tour incl Genocide Memorial, bazars, souvenir shopping. Flight back home shortly after midnight.
