This is an evening walk of approximately 6.5 miles, which starts from Chilham, the circuit goes towards Chartham. For the return leg it crosses the A28, to follow the North Downs Way (NDW) to Old Wives Lees and back down to Chilham. We set off through Chilham Square, leaving the village to cross the railway at the automated barrier crossing and beside Chilham Mill. Our route heads over fields towards Stile Farm, soon joining the Stour Valley Walk to cross Shalmsford Street.
A pleasant grass area takes us to a very sturdy new footbridge to cross the Great Stour at Chartham Weir. Our route continues by crossing the A28, climbing gently through a vineyard, before we turn left through Mansfields Fruit Farm to join the NDW. Along the way there is a good viewpoint with a bench to tarry for a while and enjoy the panorama of the surrounding landscape.
All that remains is to continue on the NDW to Old Wives Lees along Cobbs Hill, before emerging at Long Hill for the descent back to Chilham.
Dogs welcome, but on a short lead when required.
