Course Description:
The Brincadeira de Angola Method is a philosophical and methodological approach to teaching Capoeira as an educational tool. It's goal is to develop social, cultural, corporal and musical potential through fun and playful activities, in order to contribute in the development of more autonomous, cooperative and reflective individuals.
The method has been developed by Mestre Ferradura in the last 25 years and enhances fundamental aspects of Capoeira, such as creativity, natural movement, cooperation, musicality, drama and dance.
The educational tools explored in the classes might be applied to any age group, including adults. As children between the ages of 1 to 6 years require the biggest knowledge to work with, there will be focus on developmentally appropriate teaching for these ages.
About IBCE:
Mestre Ferradura is the director of Instituto Brasileiro de Capoeira Educação (IBCE), a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote access to culture for historically marginalized people, including blind and visually impaired children, the LGBTQ+ community, underprivileged children, the un-housed, incarcerated youth, psychiatric patients and low-income residents of Rio de Janeiro’s local favelas.
The NGO IBCE was implemented in 2020 and has launched the Capoeira-Education School which is providing a year-long course in education and training to a cohort of teenagers to work with this artform.

Bio: OMRI BREDA - MESTRE FERRADURA
Omri Ferradura developed an educational method based on Capoeira’s history as an oral tradition and structured it with a solid pedagogical knowledge, creating the ‘Brincadeira de Angola’ method. The word ‘brincadeira’ means play, thus being a literal translation of how education should always be— fun!
Omri Ferradura was raised in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, where, from a very young age, he was exposed to the rhythms and culture that are the pulse of this city. He was introduced to capoeira as a teenager, and has become a renowned master. His research in music and movement led him to take part in a number of works with Brazilian dance and theater companies. In 2006 he completed a BA in Education, uniting the knowledge of popular culture with academic research. Since then, he has had a successful career as both teacher and performer; he has implemented his work in many schools around Rio with children and adults alike.
Over the years, Mestre Ferradura has led dozens of workshops in Brazil and around the world, preparing teachers for the challenges of working on a holistic approach to education—one that encompasses music, creative body movement, social interactions and cultural elements. With the aim of sharing this knowledge, he set up the Brazilian Capoeira-Education Institute (IBCE), and an open-source site, www.capoeiraibce.com, which explains in detail how Capoeira teachers all over the world can apply the method. His goal is to build an egalitarian teaching-learning process in which students can build their own knowledge in a cooperative, creative movement-based environment. Over 5,000 teachers have already enrolled for the free online courses.
His academic articles: “A capoeira como prática educativa transformadora”, "A Capoeira como prática pedagógica na Educação Infantil" e “Capoeira e educação libertaria para a formação de sujeitos autônomos” were selected to represent Capoeira on RIo de Janeiro's Secretary of Education website.
