This year’s Book Illustrators exhibit has been a labor of love, spearheaded by Valerie Caveglia, Hayward Education Foundation President and former Executive Director at the Sun, and Dorsi Diaz, Sun Gallery’s current Board of Directors President and former Executive Director/Curator at the Sun.
Together, the Hayward Rotary Club, the Hayward Education Foundation, the community, and Sun Gallery have collaborated to present the Many Hands, One Masterpiece initiative to HUSD second graders, expanding equitable access to the arts by introducing underserved students to a legacy children’s book illustrator exhibition and fostering cultural awareness through storytelling, visual interpretation, and shared creative experiences. The project strengthens a local arts organization (the Sun Gallery) by increasing youth participation and demonstrating the role of cultural institutions as community-centered learning spaces. These once-in-a-lifetime experiences: class field trips at the gallery include a personalized tour, and a teacher-led art lesson in the studio, based on artwork in the show.
The Sun Gallery is located at 1015 E Street, Hayward, CA 94541. The phone number is 510-581-4050, and our website is at . The gallery is open Fridays & Saturdays 11 am – 4 pm, and admission is free to the public.
