Learn the impact that medications frequently prescribed to children have on Play Therapy treatment.
About this Event

Participants will learn about commonly prescribed psychotropic medications for children and how to collaborate effectively with prescribing physicians. Participants will learn how to assess for the imapct of medications on play behavior and playful strategies to communicate with children and families about their medications, their use, and their impact on behavior. Training will include practice resources, discussion of case examples, and discussion of how to create treatment plans that integrate the use of psychotropic medications. Completion of a Post-Test and Evaluation are required.

Training will be live and in-person only.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:

1. Assess for the impact of psychopharmaceuticals on play behaviors of clients in Play Therapy

2. Identify commonly prescribed psychopharmaceutical medications and their impacts on child behavior and play behavior

3. List side effects and adverse reactions to psychopharmaceuticals that Play Therapists may assess for in Play Therapy

4. Prepare playful Play Therapy strategies for communicating with children and families about psychopharmacological treatment

5. Identify strategies for Play Therapists to communicate and collaborate with prescribing professionals about

6. Create treatment plans that integrate Play Therapy and psychopharmacological interventions


Tentative Agenda:

9:00 am – 10:30 am – Introduction to Child Psychopharmacology

10:30 am – 12:00 pm – Play Therapy with clients prescribed Stimulant medications

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm - Lunch

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Play Therapy with clients prescribed Anxiolytic & Antidepressant Medications

2:30 pm – 4:00 pm – Play Therapy with clients prescribed Antipsychotic Medications

4:00 pm – Wrap-up, Review, & Post-Test

Participation

A Time for Play Therapy Continuing Education events are professional trainings developed for master's level mental health clinicians and students. Prior Play Therapy knowledge and experience are helpful but not necessary to participate. Play Therapy credit available to mental health professionals and graduate students in a mental health program.


Handouts

Each registration for an A Time for Play Continuing Education includes limited time access to a Google Drive folders with handouts specific to the training. It also includes a folder of suggested readings of articles, book excerpts, and research that are specifically relevant to the Play Therapy training topic. Please make sure you are able to access and download the materials.


Virtual Attendance

Per APT guidelines, virtually attendees must keep your cameras on and be present and focused throughout the entire presentation. This guideline is especially important because there are several interactive activities and breakout discussions that require group participation.


Post-Test and Evaluation

Participants will be given a post-test and an anonymous evaluation to complete at the end of each training. Participants must attest to completing the evaluation and must meet a minimum score of 80% to receive Continuing Education credit.

Cancellation and refund policy

Registration refunds will NOT be made to parties who register but do not attend or do not request a refund from the organizer 24 hours in advance.

Participants requiring accommodations must submit a medical professional’s note specifying the required accommodations to [email protected] at least 7 days prior to any training for which they have registered.


Cancellation Policy

A Time for Play reserves the right to cancel any of these training in the event of unforeseen circumstances. If such a cancellation occurs, A Time for Play will attempt to notify registrants and refund all registration fees.


Continuing Education Credits

This Continuing Education event is acceptable for the purposes of license renewal for Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists in the state of Texas by fully complying with Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council guidelines and Texas Administrative Code RULE §781.501, RULE §681.142, & RULE §801.261

The Association for Play Therapy sets the credentialing standards for Play Therapists and approves applications for the Registered Play Therapist Credential. The Healing Place Therapy Center, PLLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The Healing Place, PLLC maintains and delivers the A Time for Play | Play Therapy training series and is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

It is the responsibility of mental health professionals to check with their state board to determine if credit issued through an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider or an Association for Play Therapy approved provider of the play therapy CE is accepted for credit by their state board.
