As school districts across Maine prepare to welcome 3- and 4-year-olds into their preschool programs, transportation of these students will create unique challenges that many districts are unaware of.On large buses compartmentalization does not provide protection to smaller students ~ smaller buses are equipped with seat belts and must be used, When districts use vans they are not exempt from Maine’s Child Passenger Safety Law which requires a 5-point harness for any child under 55 lbs. Maine DOE, NHTSA and NCST all recommend Pre K children ride in Child Safety Restraint Systems (CSRS) in an effort to support these recommendation Gorham Fire Rescue is offering the National Child Passenger Safety on School Bus training.
