This is a Chicago story worth telling. One summer night in 1971 on the North Side, Steve Goodman introduced Kris Kristofferson to John Prine.Kristofferson was in town playing the Quite Knight, with Goodman opening. Impressed by Goodman’s songwriting, Kris was repeatedly urged to hear Prine play live. Late on a Sunday night, Goodman finally brought him over, along with Paul Anka and Angela Lansbury.
With the club nearly empty, Prine played a handful of songs just for them. Kristofferson was so moved he asked Prine to play the songs all again. The night stretched into the early hours, and Prine went home knowing everything had changed, all because of Steve Goodman.
