The Cheshire 3 Peaks Challenge may not be as well known as its bigger siblings in Yorkshire and Derbyshire, or indeed the ever popular national version, but it forms a fantastic testing route on the Western edge of the Peak District and walkers underestimate it at their peril! On our winter edition, taking in the three highest peaks in the county, the route involves over 800m of ascent over its 22km distance, passing through a variety of landscapes including remote high moorland, heathland, farmland, meadows and tranquil broadleaf woodland. Our journey sees us climb the county’s highpoint, Shining Tor, summit the Matterhorn of Cheshire, Shutlingsloe, and investigate the history of Tegg’s Nose. We skirt reservoirs, Macclesfield Forest and enjoy stunning views over Cheshire towards North Wales, Jodrell Bank, Mersyside and Manchester. The varied terrain offers the opportunity to take in a wide range of flora and fauna, as well as historic sites and the stories of this landscape. For those taking on N3P or Y3P, this walk offers and ideal opportunity to fine tune kit and strategies, while offering a great day’s training for upcoming challenges.
