Strengthen your portrait skills from the ground up in this focused 3-day workshop designed for artists of all levels. Whether you’re new to portraits or looking to refine your technique, this workshop offers a clear, approachable structure for understanding proportion, value, color, and expressive paint application. Cheryl’s method emphasizes building portraits through strong design and confident observation—skills that translate to every medium and every subject.
Day 1 — Proportion & Value Mapping Learn how to place features accurately, understand the structure of the head at different angles, and create a strong foundation using simple proportion systems. Students then explore value mapping: simplifying light and shadow to design a portrait with clarity, mood, and intention.
Day 2 — Tonal Block-Ins, Color Theory & Palette Exploration Build on your Day 1 foundation by developing a tonal block-in—the essential first stage of any successful painting or drawing. You’ll also learn the basics of color theory, limited palettes, and how color choices support structure, form, and emotion. Students experiment with color in small, guided studies to build confidence.
Day 3 — Final Painting: Edges, Refinement & Expressive Application Finish your portrait with attention to edges, transitions, and paint handling. Learn how expressive brushwork, selective detail, and thoughtful mark-making create impact and personality in a portrait. Students complete a finished monochrome or color portrait using the techniques learned throughout the workshop.
