About the band
Presenting the ultimate International Folk and Dance Party Machine from Portland, Oregon! Combining the energy and passion of Eastern European pop and polka, Jamaican ska, American jazz, punk, and disco, with Romani folk music, Chervona brings to the game a fiery new and compelling sound.
With authenticity and spirit, shining with soulful brass and sonorous woodwinds, hearts are freed by the traditional sounds of the old world wrapped in energetic new interpretations. Chervona transforms any moment into the year’s celebration!
Chervona’s repertoire includes original songs, a few covers of well-known American tunes, and traditional Russian and Ukrainian hits from the late 19th century. Always passionate and spirited, Their songs have been described as “funny, sarcastic, educational, socially conscious and beautiful.”
Chervona has been performing for over 15 years, and on many stages – from tiny clubs to large festivals and all points in between, within the Pacific Northwest and along the West Coast. These include: the Crocodile in Seattle; the Oregon Country Fair in Eugene; the Under Volcano Festival in Vancouver, BC; the 2019 Oregon Eclipse Fest; and many, many other clubs and carnivals.
“Chervona” means red and/or beautiful in Ukrainian and Polish. This unique multicultural ensemble has roots in Russian, Armenian, Jewish, Italian, Brazilian, German, Argentinean, Kazakhstani, and American music and culture. Three of the current band members are immigrants from the former Soviet Union, the rest were born in the United States.
Chervona started rehearsing in November of 2006, and within its first early weeks performed at “Gypsymania” – a gypsy dance discotheque created by Gogol Bordello’s own lead debaucher D.J. Dimon. Chervona then rapidly gained popularity in their hometown, and over the subsequent 15 years has developed a compelling sound of its very own, honed into marvelous shape by performing many hundreds of shows on stages both great and small, but always to high acclaim.
Chervona has shared the stage with many exciting international, regional, and Portland area bands including Manu Chao, The Decemberists, Pink Martini, Storm Large, Gogol Bordello, Fanfare Chekarea, Red Elvises, Tete’, Kultur Shock, March Fourth Marching Band, Firewater, Eleni Mandell, Vagabond Opera, Freak Mountain Ramblers, 3 Leg Torso, Golem, Eric McFadden Trio, Fish Tank Ensemble, Krebsic Orchestar, Underscore Orchestra, Barynya, Vadim Kolpakov, Lions of Batucada, Mummy Troll, Petrovich Company, PAVA, Auktyon (the most famous Russian band) and many other excellent musical acts and artists.

CRITICAL PRAISE
“It is impossible to describe Chervona’s sound without sounding ridiculous. Vagabonding gypsy folk-punk? Russian fever-folk? Neo-Bohemian dance-rock? Punk/big band fusion? Regardless, Chervona’s musical styling is raucously unique… What stands out the most is Chervona’s lack of reliance on flimsy kitsch. They are adamant about being seen not as another band that uses its Eastern European heritage as a gimmick. Rather, they set out to make the best possible music they know-how, regardless of their background.” – Pat Moran, The Deli Magazine
“Along with Pitersky’s over-the-top personality, gang vocals from the rest of the band made the performance quite theatrical… Madness was in the air. Someone passed around a giant box of chocolates… strangers twirled one another in the crowd…” – Jason Simms, The Oregonian
“If you’re familiar with Gogol Bordello or the Red Elvises, you already have a sense of the dance madness a band like this can create. Chervona is a bit different than those two bands, however, as frontman Andreyshka Pitersky plays traditional Russian military songs, folk songs and drinking songs (in English and Russian), but allows influences to sneak in from all of the other band members’ ethnic backgrounds.” – Vanessa Salvia, Eugene Weekly
