About this Event
Chelsea J. Ferguson is an artist/archivist/writer living and working out of Portland, OR. As an artist she experiments with the use of shared cultural languages and symbols as a means to challenge our awareness of, and participation in upholding, oppressive structural narratives around race, gender, and capitalism. Her visual grammar is informed by an early career in media and advertising, and a lifelong study of popular culture. To date her work has been featured in local Portland galleries and Visual Art Journal, with forthcoming features in Divine Enthusiast, and Black Feminist Collective.
In the works coming to the Hox Gallery, a merging of newsprint, collage, and screen printing allows the artist to at once archive, subvert, and respond to, the historic record. On reclaimed pages, shouting typography and provocative imagery couplings cut through “objectivity” and “passive voice” to make things plain in honest black and corrective red.
