This weekend intensive will focus on the simple, humble and mighty object: the drinking glass.
About this Event

This weekend intensive will focus on the simple, humble and mighty object: the drinking glass. We’ll make a lot of them. Some will be great. Some will be less great…

This hands-on weekend will focus on building strong, repeatable cup-making skills while keeping things light, playful, and productive. We’ll talk technique, efficiency, and problem-solving, but also embrace the chaos and improvisation that comes with hot glass. Expect demos, lots of bench time, and plenty of "aha" moments.

Things We’ll Definitely Do

  • Practice a variety of drinking vessel shapes
  • Focus on preventing thick lips and uneven walls and bottoms—and sometimes win
  • Make shapes that feel good to use
  • Learn how to work hotter and faster without freaking out
  • Talk through common mistakes and work together as a team... there's no "I" in glassblowing

Who This Is For

You’ve worked with hot glass for at least 2 years, you can gather and make stuff but you need refinement in your process and finished product. Advanced beginner / intermediate folks are welcome.

What You’ll Leave With

A small stash of finished drinking glasses and a way better understanding of how to make vessel work that’s actually functional

Overall Vibe

Low-pressure, high-heat, lots of encouragement and insight. Ask questions, mess up, try again. A process oriented class where the goal is confidence, consistency, and having a genuinely good time while making functional objects

What to Expect:

Students will work together and learn to manipulate molten glass (2000 degrees). Safety and tools will all be covered in a fun and exciting environment. The hot shop is a loud studio, and can get quite warm. Glassblowing involves a variety of activities including sitting, standing, and working with hot glass. The environment can be very hot and loud at times. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity and ability to lift 5-10 lbs approximately. Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.  To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Eligibility: No experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
