About CheerpJ
CheerpJ is a tool that has been widely adopted in various fields to run Java code in the browser without requiring a local Java installation, including in educational and scientific applications. This allows for a wide range of applications to be available in the browser client-side, which might otherwise not be accessible without local installations and dependencies.
The hackathon theme: scientific Java
Java is popular for scientific and educational purposes. We believe this is the perfect theme for the first edition of the CheerpJ hackathon, as it is not only enjoyable but also useful, leading to projects that can have a significant impact. Fun fact: most of our company team members have a scientific or engineering background, and we are deeply passionate about all things science!
About the organisers
We are Leaning Technologies, a tech company based in Leeds and Amsterdam! We make compilers and WebAssembly-based tech. We are hosting this hackathon event to encourage all tech enthusiast to experiment and play with our tech and create community.

This a hybrid event that takes place from November 14th to December 1st 2025.
Timetable
- 14 November [hybrid: Discord & Nexus, Leeds]: Kick-off session
- 15 - 30 November [online support]: Hacking period, to work from wherever you want
- 1 December [Hybrid: Discord & Nexus, Leeds]: Submission deadline and Closing session
Book your tickets here on EventBrite to ensure your in-person venue spot :) You will need one ticket per day, make sure to get tickets only for the dates you want to attend in-person. Please notice that the in-person part of the event it's only for the opening and closing days and there is limited capacity. If the event gets full, don't worry, you can still participate online!
Please cancel in case you can't make it so the spot is available for someone else! You don't have to attend to all the dates if you don't want to.
