Concert pianist Mila Belakova will bring Debussy’s Bergamasque Suite to life as well as other romantic classics on Monday, January 13. An accomplished concert pianist with more than 40 years of teaching experience, Mila Belakova was born in the Russian city of Orenburg located south of the Ural Mountains. At the age of 5 she made her first steps in music, and that turned out to be the beginning of a lifelong exciting journey. She received her degree in music from one of the oldest music colleges in the country, where she was trained in the best traditions of the Russian performance school, her teacher being the student of one of Tchaikovsky’s students. Since moving to Rapid City in 2007, she has been teaching piano and music theory, accompanying different orchestra instruments, choirs, and classical ballet dance classes as well as playing solo concerts for communities across South Dakota and in Washington, D.C. Her thorough and thoughtful instruction has helped her students receive numerous awards for outstanding performance and has brought her several teaching recognition prizes. Her repertoire includes a score of renowned classical masterpieces and many beautiful pieces by Russian composers yet little known to the American audience. She was awarded a Touring Artist Grant from SD Arts Council and performed for 4 years with support from the South Dakota Arts Council in schools and communities of South Dakota. Mila also received a Grant from the Music Teachers National Association and performed solo classical piano concerts in Rapid City Area elementary schools.
