Internationally acclaimed pianist and silver medalist and laureate of the International Chopin Piano Competition Charles Richard-Hamelin brings poetic insight and virtuosic brilliance to a program rooted in the Romantic piano tradition. Music of Frédéric Chopin frames the afternoon, beginning with two deeply expressive nocturnes whose lyricism and drama reveal the composer’s unique gift for piano song. At the centre stands Franz Schubert’s powerful Sonata in C minor, D. 958, a work of symphonic scope and emotional depth. Three rarely heard studies by Chopin offer elegant contrasts of colour and character before the recital culminates with Robert Schumann’s dazzling Carnaval, a gallery of vivid musical portraits filled with imagination, wit, and theatrical flair.
