While already a star in his homeland, Spanish flamenco jazz pianist and multiple GRAMMY nominee Chano Domínguez won an international following with his appearance in Calle 54, the award-winning 2000 documentary about Latin jazz. Born and raised in the traditional flamenco hotbed of Cádiz, Domínguez was attracted to jazz by fusion pioneers Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report before falling under the spell of Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk.Reflecting the influence of both his musical inspiration and the rich cultural heritage of his homeland, the pianist has found a singular niche in the language of flamenco, tackled through the lens of the post-bop tradition. The incendiary keyboardist is a dominant force in European jazz, leading an acclaimed trio and collaborating with artists including Paquito D’Rivera, Paco de Lucía, and Wynton Marsalis.
Domínguez is joined on this night by saxophonist and flamenco singer Antonio Lizana to recapture the magic contained on their 2022 Altafonte release, Estándares.
Like Domínguez, Lizana is a masterful Cádiz-born musician steeped in both flamenco and jazz tradition who has collaborated with Arturo O’Farrill, Snarky Puppy, Alfredo Rodriguez, Jorge Drexler, and Alejandro Sanz.
Estándares is an inspired alchemy of flamenco and jazz at its most lyrical, focused on a reimagined program of beloved standards including Jerome Kern’s “All the Things You Are,” Dave Brubeck’s “In Your Own Sweet Way,” and John Coltrane’s “Resolution.”
