Raising private investment for an indie film isn’t about begging for money—it’s about becoming investor-ready and creating investor relationships. This in-person discussion workgroup is for filmmakers and producers who are interested in utilizing private investment for your entertainment projects.At this first meeting, we’ll talk about the mindset of the Canadian investor, where the investment ecosystem currently is, and going out to find film investors versus investors coming to you.
The workgroup may talk about what makes a project and person investable, an investment strategy, and ways to find private investors, but the emphasis is on going out to meet and prospect for investors. A year and a half ago, a few filmmakers in Vancouver started a process on how this all happens, and it took me about eight months to piece together a comprehensive picture. But all but one other person has dropped out, and I find it hard and tiring to go out prospecting on my own, as it’s not just a matter of going out. Anyone I know who is successfully doing this has to make lifestyle changes to keep up their momentum.
I’m looking for a like-minded group to mastermind with and work on this in the long term, to build a supportive peer group focused on accountability and forward motion. This is also not legal advice; everyone ultimately will be working on their own projects.
To be part of the workgroup, you must already know how private investors can invest in projects according to Canadian securities law, how investors (and others) are paid out from successful projects, and how to create a development package.
