About this Event

Secrets of the Chalk Stream: The River Mimram at Panshanger

Location: Panshanger Park

Group size: Maximum 20 people

Duration: Approx. 45 minutes

Suitable for: Adults and older children (children must be accompanied by an adult)

Explore one of the rarest habitats on Earth – right at the heart of Panshanger Park.

The River Mimram is a precious chalk stream flowing through the centre of the park, part of a globally rare habitat described by Sir David Attenborough in Wild Isles as “one of the rarest on Earth.”

Join geologist Jane for a 45-minute illustrated talk about these fragile ecosystems, the wildlife that depends on them, and the unique geology that creates them. The talk will also explore the impacts of gravel quarrying and restoration at Panshanger Park, the threats facing chalk streams and their biodiversity, and what is – and isn’t – being done to protect them.

A perfect opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of one of Hertfordshire’s hidden natural treasures.

Please note:

  • This is a seated talk and does not involve a walk.
  • Suitable for adults and older children (children must be accompanied by an adult).

From the B1000 look for the White lodge building and Tarmac signs. http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=529266&Y=213486&A... Enter through the metal gate and follow the track along until there is a right fork with signs to ‘Area Office’. Continue along this track until you reach a car park. Do not use the Thieves Lane Carpark.

This event is part of Heritage Open Days 2025 at Panshanger Park. Make sure to also explore the stables and check out the other free activities happening over the weekend. But please book to avoid disapointment.

This event is hosted by site owners Tarmac.
