About this Event
Miro Magloire’s New Chamber Ballet returns to Manhattan with an evening of new ballets, including two world premieres, to live chamber music.
A highlight will be the world premiere of two new ballets set to music by Edvard Grieg. The first one, commissioned by Leslie and Richard Curtis, is set to Grieg's luscious third violin sonata, and features costumes by emerging costume designer Allison Morgan.
The second new work is a series of solos set to three of Grieg’s Slåtter ("peasant dances) for piano.
The evening's rousing finale will be Magloire’s Chaconne, set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s iconic violin solo. Originally premiered premiere in 2024 at the castle of Köthen, Germany, where Bach worked, the densely patterned choreography celebrates the composer’s richly textured music.
"The women danced it as a calm ritual", critic Leigh Witchel wrote about the ballet, "Magloire... had the wisdom to ignore everything that came before and concentrate on his own relationship with music and Bach... it was an assimilation and a salute... but also a benediction."
The music will be performed live by violinist Doori Na and pianist Sophiko Simsive. New Chamber Ballet’s dancers are Anabel Alpert, Megan Foley, Nicole McGinnis, Amber Neff, Rachele Perla, and Kayla Schmitt.
After the performance there will be a reception with the artists.
"It's heartening to see work so focused on the meeting of dance and music."
