Each year since 1917 ceremonies have been held on July 1st in St. John's and many other Newfoundland communities to commemorate the Royal Newfoundland Regiment soldiers who made a tragic sacrifice on July 1st 1916 at Beaumont-Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme. Nearly 800 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment went into battle. On the next day, only 68 Newfoundlanders answered the roll call. 324 men had been killed, or were missing or presumed dead and 386 were wounded, a devastating blow for the whole island.Since 2006, the 90th anniversary, there has also been a ceremony in Ottawa at the National War Memorial. Atlantic Voices has been part of this event since its inception and the choir is honoured to be involved once again this year.
