Join award-winning oral historian, Fanny Julissa García, as she leads this workshop on trauma-informed interviewing.
About this Event

In this workshop, participants will learn how to use trauma-informed interviewing techniques in dialogic exchanges with people who consent to sharing embodied memories and life histories. Participants will learn about how trauma impacts memory; the differences between individual, collective, and generational trauma; and how to prepare to engage or manage traumatic stories during an interview while holding space and care for the person who shares their experiences. The workshop will also provide information about self-care for the interviewer including an overview about how to identify vicarious trauma and after-interview care and support for the interviewee.

Fanny Julissa García is an award winning oral historian whose work focuses on oral history for social change and applied oral history. She received a Master’s degree in Oral History from Columbia University. She is the recipient of the Judge Jack B.Weinstein Scholarship Award for Oral History and the OHMA Oral History Teaching and Social Justice Award. Most recently, she received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Oral History Association to work on Separated: Stories of Injustice and Solidarity, an oral history project about families separated at the U.S./Mexico border in 2017 and 2018 through state-inflicted violence.
