A Choral Concert with Period Instruments. Featured Composer: Michael Praetorius (1571-1621). We dedicate this concert to Paul Grindlay.
About this Event

We lovingly dedicate this concert to our wonderful Artistic Director, Paul Grindlay, who has recently passed away.

It is snowing lightly on Christmas Eve, 1615, in the north German town of Wolfenbüttel and the town is full of festive excitement. On your way to church in the evening, you walk through the Christmas Market in the town square, enjoying the sights, sounds and scents of the season. As you enter the church, the organist is already playing chorale preludes, and you see the brass and string players assembling and getting set-up for the service. The church is lit with candles flickering around the audience, who are excited to hear and sing the carols and Magnificat that Praetorius has written for the special day. - Paul Grindlay

Step into the radiant soundscape of Christmas 1615 with Celestial Harmonies: The Magnificent Songs of Praetorius. This enchanting concert celebrates the timeless works of Michael Praetorius, one of the most influential composers of the early Baroque era, whose music continues to inspire with its elegance, devotion, and festive spirit.

Performed by The Renaissance Singers and Players with distinguished early music ensemble String Theory Music Collective and special guests on period instruments—including string ensemble, lute, Portatif, sackbuts, cornetto and organ—this program brings Praetorius’ sacred and seasonal repertoire to life in its original sonic brilliance. From well-known hymns such as Geborn ist Gottes Söhnelein to the jubilant In dulci jubilo, each piece evokes the warmth and wonder of the Nativity through rich harmonies and vibrant instrumental color.

Join us for an evening of authentic Early Baroque sound, where voices and period instruments unite to illuminate the celestial harmonies of Christmas past.
