Posting on behalf of my dad, Joe… as he does not have social media… I encourage all to share the invite with any former players, teammates/coaches who may be interested:Donald Mittner was my friend. He taught me about true friendship through his respect, love, guidance, loyalty, and above all, unconditional support. He lived a large life in this small town of ours that we call home. His last lesson is that an unselfish life of serving others is a good life. He put others first in his daily living through faith, family, school, and community. His legacy is meant to be celebrated and his relentless (and loud) spirit is meant to be kept alive by the many, many people, both young and old, who he has impacted. He has passed on to us a mission of how we should do things in our own lives. Don Mittner loved big, and Don Mittner was loved about as much as a person could possibly be loved by our town. There may have never been anything more evident in New Brighton, Pennsylvania 15066!
To Aliene: He was so blessed to have an uncommon love affair for 40 years with a New Brighton girl as special as you. Please take solace in having that love that you shared together, and know how special of a family life you created together.
To Lauren, Andrew, and Alex: Always celebrate the fact that you were blessed with his presence and love throughout your lives. Don Mittner, NB’s greatest son, was your father, and that will never change.
The Mittner family let me into their home on Tuesday to share stories, and watch the video tribute before it went out. I’m forever grateful! Because the week before, Mitt and I had lunch, and I wished him good luck on his knee replacement surgery (needed on his left leg, because of the thousands of punts that he made-it’s an NB Lion Football thing), and he wished me well on my first trip to Italy on an eight day cruise with Patty. You can see where this is going…. I received the news from Aliene while out of country, and unfortunately we did not return until Monday night.
I am reeling by the fact that I did not get to provide any comfort and support as our community grieved and celebrated. So here’s my selfish plea:
I will be at the Oak Hill Field (with the blessing of Mittner family) to share stories about Coach Don Mittner and the 30+ years spent coaching the Mighty NB Lions together.
WHY: To celebrate the football life of NBHOF Coach and Player - Donald Mittner
WHEN: Thursday, April 2, 6:00pm, and after at The Blue Marble for anyone that cares to hear and share more.
WHO: Anyone that has ever played with, coached with, or played for Mitt
Hope to see you there.
