Celebration of Efua Dorkenoo OBE - the Mother of the Global FGM Movement & founder of FORWARD UK, screening of Moolaadé & panel discussion.
About this Event

Join us for a special screening of Moolaadé (2004) as part of Black History Month 2024. Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Ousmane Sembène, Moolaadé tells the story of Colle, a brave woman set in a Burkina Faso village who defies tradition by offering protection, or "moolaadé," to young girls fleeing the practice of FGM. The film explores powerful themes of resistance, community, gender- based violence and a woman’s courage to fight for what is right.

This narrative of a strong female character protecting girls from FGM resonates deeply with the legacy of Efua Dorkenoo OBE, founder of FORWARD UK. Known as "Mama Efua," she was a global leader in the fight to end FGM and championed the rights of African women and girls. As we mark the 10th anniversary of her passing, we honour her fearless activism and the tireless work she did to protect future generations from FGM. Following the screening, a panel discussion will delve into the themes of legacy, activism, and the fight to protect the rights of African women and girls globally.

Speaker and Panellists:

Freddie Greene - Husband of Efua Dorkenoo OBE

Janet Fyle MBE – Professional Policy Advisor

Adwoa Kwateng Kluvitise - Former Director of FORWARD
