About this Event
Join us as we honor the life and legacy of Azie Taylor Morton, a Bastrop County native who made history as the first and only African American to serve as Treasurer of the United States.
Appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, Morton was a pioneering leader who oversaw the U.S. Mint, managed government funds, and became the first African American woman to have her signature printed on U.S. currency. Her dedication to public service, financial literacy, and civil rights made her a trailblazer whose impact is still felt today.
This celebration of life will also include a special proclamation ceremony and will recognize her extraordinary achievements and her lasting influence on our community and the nation.
We extend a special thanks to Bastrop County Cares Board Members Charlie Colter and Janice L. Sumler-Edmond for their dedication and hard work as part of the task force for this event. Your commitment to joining in and preserving and sharing our community’s rich history is invaluable!
💖 This event is free and open to the public. 💖
