The Kensington & Chelsea Women’s Club has kindly invited the BADA Friends to their talk on Art Deco. On November 8, 1925, the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts closed in Paris.
The fair, showcasing over 15,000 exhibitors of innovative designs by established artists and emerging visionaries, gave a name to an already flourishing artistic movement, thereafter known as Art Deco.
Seen as a departure from the florid and sinuous lines of the preceding Art Nouveau period, Art Deco celebrated geometry and a faith in machinery contributing to craftsmanship. New materials emerged and luxury was unapologetically emphasised in this style defining Jazz Age optimism.
Victoria and Albert Museum lecturer, Anne Haworth, will guide us on this celebratory centenary (and a bit!) look back at a design era that defined everything from the teapot to the skyscraper. Please join us for what promises to be a wonderful tribute to all things Art Deco.
