Learn how land conservation is DONE RIGHT (and see some examples of not so right).
The Cedar Lakes Conservation Foundation, Inc. (CLCF) is a non-profit land trust that focuses on the ecosystem health of Wisconsin’s Cedar Lakes region, made up of Gilbert, Big Cedar, Little Cedar, Lucas, Silver and Quaas Lakes. Much of this area comprises the headwaters of Cedar Creek, which flows southeast to the Milwaukee River and ultimately to Lake Michigan.
Founded in 1974 by Geoff Maclay, CLCF is one of the oldest land trusts in Wisconsin. At that time, the newly formed CLCF recognized the need to conserve the natural environment of the region and protect a vanishing landscape that development could change irreparably. Since its founding, CLCF has used such measures as fee simple
purchases, conservation easements and deed restrictions to protect land in perpetuity, helping to protect 3,096 acres in the Cedar Lakes region.
The vision encompasses providing diverse natural ecosystems, healthy watersheds, habitat for recreational and educational opportunities, scenic vistas, and sustainable working farms.
In a prosperous partnership with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), CLCF and other partners have been awarded funds from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. Together, CLCF and MMSD have protected more than 375 acres of natural and/or working land in the Cedar Lakes region., with customized plans
for each landowner’s goals, such as keeping the land under the ownership and/or management of a farmer, protecting forests and marshes that may also exist on the property, and more. This partnership between CLCF and MMSD is truly special.
Join us as we hear the remarkable story of this partnership and the Cedar Lake Conservation.
