Contemporary Czech Art in Berlin
About this Event

Join us on our next CCAiB Studio Visits. Each month, we collectively visit the studio/working space of a specific local artist/cultural worker/curator with a Czech-German background in contemporary visual arts. During the visit, there will be a brief moderated interview and an artist presentation, all in a more relaxed atmosphere with the opportunity for mutual discussion. This month we are going to visit the studio of .

Gabriela Těthalová (born 1988) is a Czech artist known for her bold, geometric paintings. Her works are notable for their meticulous attention to geometric shapes and a vibrant color palette, combined with quick, gestural strokes. She often employs interlocking and overlapping surfaces, which disrupt one’s spatial orientation. Before she decided to become an artist, she completed a master's degree in mathematics where she often finds inspiration, as well as in other artistic forms such as music, poetry, or art history.

Těthalová studied at the HFBK Hamburg University of Fine Arts and previously at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design under Jiří Černický and Marek Meduna, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 2013, she completed her master's degree in mathematics at Charles University in Prague. In 2020, she was represented at Academy POSITIONS 2020 in Berlin, and in 2023, she was awarded the Jindřich Chalupecký Award for young Czech artists. Her art has been exhibited internationally, with shows in Prague, Hamburg, and New York.

During the Studio Visit with Gabriela Těthalová, you will learn about the main themes in her past and upcoming artwork. She'll discuss how being an artist and expat in Berlin affects her creative process, balancing chaos with clarity, planning with spontaneity, and the constant exploration of contemporary life.

Registration until May 9 is requested, as spaces are limited. Even if you can't make it to the studio, you can look forward to a new interview in the updated CCAiB podcast series. And don’t miss out our new podcast update episode with Anna Kubelík! Also, be sure to visit Pragovka Gallery's website and apply for their Opencall for the year 2025. The topic is RESOURCES. The application deadline is May 2, 2024!
