About this Event
Join the RIBA North West Conservation, Heritage & Sustainability group for a guided tour ofManchester's first ‘sky park’, Castlefield Viaduct, followed by drinks and a social at the nearby Barca Bar.
Built in 1892, Castlefield Viaduct railway, close to the Great Northern Warehouse, used to carry heavy rail traffic until its closure in 1969. Castlefield viaduct, Grade II Listed, is an amazing example of structural engineering representing the innovative technologies of the Industrial revolution in our city, in the 19th century. The viaduct was design by Heenan & Froude, the designers of Blackpool Tower (inspired by Eiffel Tower, 1889).
In the 21st Century, ‘Sky parks’ around the world (i.e. High line New York, Promenade Planteé, West Toronto Railpath, Seoul, etc) have been an integral part of the urban fabric. These ‘elevated parks’ have contributed to improve urban biodiversity and human wellbeing.
National Trust has kindly offered a guided tour, to share their experiences in restoring and regenerating the site, which opened to the public in 2023, and their plans of future of the viaduct.
Places are limited so book now to avoid disapointment.
Following the tour, we will organise a friendly social event at the nearby Barca Bar, which will be a great chance to socialise and network. Tickets include food and drinks.
Thank you to The National Trust for hosting the tour.
