The first publication of Casa Kahlo, Frida Kahlo's private Mexico City family home and personal sanctuary, and its collections of her art, clothing, jewelry, and treasured keepsakes, the house has been opened to visitors for the first time in nearly 100 years.
Curated and written by her great-nieces, who lived in the house throughout their lives, this book offers an unparalleled glimpse into Frida Kahlo, opening a new perspective into this iconic artist's family home and refuge. Casa Kahlo was more than a second home — it was a place where Frida could truly be herself away from the house she shared with her husband, the artist Diego Rivera. At Casa Kahlo — surrounded by her artistic family and the vibrant Indigenous culture she immersed herself in — she spent time with her closest confidantes (her sisters), her friends, and her lovers. The house also served as an additional studio space for Kahlo where she taught art classes to a legion of loyal students who referred to themselves as Los Fridos.
Remarkably, Casa Kahlo has been occupied by Frida's family since they bought the house in 1930. Meticulously documenting the interiors, this book features a rich array of personal items and never-before-published letters and postcards to her sisters, her mother, and her most beloved niece Isolda. Hundreds of personal items offer an intimate view into her artistic environment and personal life: from her early drawings and paintings (including the first painting she showed Rivera at eighteen years old) to later drawings; her distinctive jewelry and clothing; key documents, including her birth and marriage certificates; artworks; and keepsakes ranging from dolls to her taxidermy butterfly collection.
Written by her closest family members, the book presents a very fresh and deeply personal perspective on the artist's life, enriched by their unique connection to her legacy.
Mara Romeo, grandniece of Frida Kahlo, and daughter of Isolda Kahlo (Frida’s only niece), has transformed the pride of her heritage into a responsibility: dedicating her life to protecting the proper use of the name Frida Kahlo. With her professional background in Advertising and Management, she has served as President of the company Familia Kahlo for more than 20 years, and she is the founder of Museo Casa Kahlo, opened in September 2025. She is also the President of the NY based Kahlo Foundation for Mexican Arts and Culture, dedicated to preserve the Kahlo family legacy, supporting women, artists, artisans and promoting a more just society. Her work is rooted in a family conviction: to promote the Kahlo values—strength, resilience, creativity, empathy, and love for Mexico—into concrete action, guided by a simple principle: más amor, más familia, más México.
Mara De Anda, daughter of Mara Romeo and granddaughter of Isolda P. Kahlo, dedicates her life to honoring and responsibly sharing Frida Kahlo’s family legacy through an intimate and authentic lens, inspired by the story of her grandmother Isolda — Frida Kahlo’s only niece. With a career in Communication Sciences and an M.D. in Media Production, she has worked in licensing the Kahlo image and brand since 2003 and, from that same year, has led the commercial direction of the company Familia Kahlo, the holder of the global trademark rights to the name and image of Frida Kahlo. She is also a founder of the newly inaugurated Museo Casa Kahlo and is actively involved in the Kahlo Foundation for Mexican Arts and Culture, where she develops and operates cultural and artistic projects.
Frida Hentschel, daughter of Mara Romeo and granddaughter of Isolda P. Kahlo, firmly believes that change happens when people come together in pursuit of truth, creativity, community, and love. She views her Kahlo family history as a tool for inspiration and global change. A graduate of ITAM with a degree in Applied Mathematics and a master’s degree in Intelligent Interactive Systems from UPF, Frida worked in the energy sector for more than ten years. Since 2024, she has shifted her professional career to focus on creating projects centered on social impact and philanthropy. She is the treasurer of the Kahlo Foundation and the founder of the Corazón Kahlo platform; both aim to promote the arts and to create transparent and fair structures that support community development, while expanding the Kahlo values and legacy.
