About this Event
Kids and youth (ages 10-18) who have at least two years of experience on a musical instrument are invited to create some fun music!
No prior experience in composition or improvisation is required. The instructors start with a series of musical games that show us how to improvise as an ensemble. We then watch a few clips of cartoons and discuss how the music sounds. After a short break, we watch a 3-minute cartoon (with no sound) and spend an hour composing the soundtrack together, using musical ideas brainstormed by the young musicians. Finally, we rehearse and give a performance for the parents!
The cartoons will be displayed on a large screen in the performance room. Each workshop features different cartoons, so if a young musician comes to two or more workshops, they will have a new experience each time! We have previously led this workshop with 1-3 minute cartoons from series including Minions, Om Nom, Sunny Bunnies, Chicky, Pocoyo, and Level Up. We avoid any cartoons which rely on dialogue, so the story can be told fully through visuals and our soundtrack. We are careful to steer clear of any cartoons which depict violence or racial stereotyping.
The program is designed and taught by Dr. Chappell Kingsland (Professor at the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver) and Michael Pordesimo (Teacher at the Center for Musical Arts, Lafayette). CARTOON MUSIC WORKSHOPS are produced by Wild Beautiful Orchestra, a project of the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center.
