About this Event
This event has been rescheduled to October 5, 2024 and will be held at our CORE garden (located behind the Carroll County Agricultural Center). Directions will be provided in the confirmation email).
Join the Carroll County Master Gardeners for a class on Advanced Seed Saving and Beyond! We’ll begin with a short review of seed saving basics so anyone can attend. Then we’ll leap into:
- isolation, “flysolation”, breeding, and sterile cultivars
- patent and trademark restrictions
- ethical guidelines and biological constraints
- “Sow fresh” seeds (magnolias, nuts, pits)
- non-grafted, self-pollinated roses and fruit trees
- cactus, daffodils, tulips, dahlias, and orchids
- testing viability, cold stratification, and breaking dormancy
At intermission:
- tour the garden and, with the help of guides, collect seeds to take home
- peruse our “seed buffet” for more varieties to sample
- bring your questions for master gardeners to answer. We’re also learning!
Before leaving:
- learn about regional seed exchanges, plant swaps, and seed libraries you can explore
- discover how many others are online
- see how you can trade your prolific dill for an entire garden of vegetable or flower seeds
- have a way to get those fish pepper or fenugreek seeds that you’ve always hoped for but could never find!
We won’t be able to cover everything in two hours. We’ll try to focus on YOUR specific needs and interests now and give you resources to explore further at your leisure.
Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.
