Join local geologist and educator Martin Steinpress for a fascinating guided geology walk through the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline near Martinez. This 2.5 to 3-hour field trip will explore the incredible geological history of the area while walking along the paved Carquinez Scenic Drive and George Miller Regional Trail.
Participants will visit several roadside geology sites where Martin will discuss rock types, sedimentary environments, deformation features, and the ancient geological forces that shaped the region. The walk will also include discussion of the formation of the Carquinez Strait and John Muir’s contributions to the scientific understanding of Yosemite’s glacial history.
The experience includes a scenic walk to a Carquinez Strait overlook, with time to pause for a picnic lunch if desired. Please bring your own lunch, water, walking shoes, and sun protection.
Carpooling is encouraged as parking is limited at the site stops.
A minimum $25 donation to the John Muir Association is requested. Space is limited to 20 participants.
We will meet at the West end of the Marina Parking lot in Martinez at 9:30 am. Car pools will be arranged and leave parking lot at 9:50 am.
