A history of Carnival, from its global roots in slavery, through to the development of the first official carnival in the UK, in Leeds, in 1967.The evening includes performances and speakers, which represent the breadth and depth of carnival as an event which celebrates Caribbean culture; and is a catalyst to integration and understanding in our city.
Featuring:
– Your host and MC, Simon Namsoo, also troupe leader of Mama Dread’s Masqueraders.
– Talk: Professor Emily Zobel Marshall, Professor in Post Colonial Literature at Leeds. Beckett University.. Topic, THE POWER OF MAS. “Global historIes of Caribbean Carnival cultures.”
– Talk: Asha France, a prominent figure in the Leeds Carnival, daughter of Arthur France, original founder of Leeds Carnival. Topic, “The development of Leeds Carnival and Asha’s personal experiences growing up around the Leeds Carnival experience.
– Performance: “Midnight Robber”, a popular historical masquerade.
– Short film: “We Are All Immigrants” (Rowenna J Baldwin 2019) The film carries a message of remembrance and solidarity with all migrants who have suffered injustice in the world and celebrates the joy of diversity.
– Finale: Melvin Zackers brings the evening to a close, with some wonderful live steel pan music.
