The Monadliath is a large desolate area of high-altitude moorland that contains four Munros. The route below includes three of them.
Start from the CP before the bridge over the Allt a’ Chaorainn at the end of the public road 2km WNW from Newtonmore, NN692997. Cross the bridge and follow the track W for 1km. Turn NW up the track on the E side of the Allt Fionndrigh and cross it on a FBᵉˣ after 3½km. Follow a path SW through a defile into Glen Ballach, curving NW alongside the burn. Turn SW across the Allt Ballach near a line of grouse buttsᵉˣ at about NH647020 and climb W directly up the fall-line to the crest of a ridge. Follow this ridge NNW, over the 923m summit of an unnamed Munro Top, and up to the summit of Carn Dearg. Descend NW to a shallow col, head N over Carn Ban and curving NE over Carn Ballach. Continue NE curving E over several vague summits to reach Carn Sgulain. The entire route from Carn Ban to Carn Sgulain is blessed with a fence-lineᵉˣ that should assist navigation in poor visibility.
Retrace steps for 380m then fork left, heading SE, curving S around the headwaters of the Allt Cuil na Caillich, aiming to cross its main stream at about NH676047. Climb the easy slope SE to the summit of A’ Chailleach. Descend S. A baggers’ path may be found that leads to a stalkers’ hut and a path leading SE down to the Allt a’ Chaorainn. Cross the burn and follow the track S back to the CP.
* A shorter route to A’ Chailleach follows the track N on the E side the Allt a’ Chaorainn for about 2km.
Cross the burn at NH692018 and head NW uphill on a path to the stalkers’ hut. Continue on the stalkers’ path up a steeper section. When the angle eases, a baggers’ path diverges, heading N directly for the summit of A’ Chailleach. Descend SW to Geal Charn, 889m, then S to Creag na h-Iolare. Descend ESE, traversing
across the hillside above the gorge bearing the Allt Glac a’ Chaise. Once E of the gorge, curve down SSE to cross a fence and the burn at NH683²⁶014³⁸. Continue SSE, traversing across the hillside down to the Fort, 397mᵉˣ. Head S on a path to reach the bridge over the Allt Chaorainn and return to the CP.
