Meet Carmelita Colón — the true Queen of Tamales whose extraordinary life was nearly erased from history. In this bold, funny, Wild‑West‑meets‑choose‑your‑own‑adventure tale, she steps into a museum only to find her ex‑husband celebrated while she’s nowhere to be found. So Carmelita rewrites the story herself.
Written and directed by Ana Maria Campoy, Carmelita is a vibrant new play about migration, resilience, and the power of women building community against all odds. Starring the fiery Antonieta Carpio, with music by Olivia Pedroza and Clarice Marx as the Voice of History, this is a celebration of the women who shaped our towns but never made it into the archives.
Full of humor, heart, and hope, Carmelita invites audiences to laugh, cheer, and witness a heroine who refuses to be forgotten.
A story of courage, community, and claiming your place in history.
How do you break free from an assigned narrative? Meet Carmelita Colon, determined to do just that, challenging us to acquaint ourselves with assumed history and to re-imagine what it means to reclaim our stories.
Here's why Carmelita is a must see:
A tale of gold rushes, wars, outlaws, and tamale recipes.
Historical fiction immerses you in one woman's treacherous and triumphant journey from 1860s Mexico to WA Territory.
