Speakers
Dr. Alex George is a presenter, best-selling author, and Youth Mental Health Ambassador to the government. He is also the co-founder of Mettle, the mental fitness app for men.
Alex has become a well-known and respected figure amongst healthcare professionals in the UK, from his years as an A&E doctor, to bringing the nation accessible and reassuring advice directly from the frontline throughout the pandemic. He has published three Sunday Times Bestsellers and published his fourth book in January 2024.
Alex is on a mission to improve mental health support for young people and has become prolific throughout the UK in his campaigning for Early Support Hubs, as well as his recent work alongside the Royal Foundation with the Prince and Princess of Wales. He also has a hugely successful podcast, Stompcast, which promotes the importance of walking in nature for mental and physical wellbeing.
Professor Frances Rice (PhD 2003) is on the Senior Leadership team for the Neuroscience and Mental Health Innovation Institute and is also the Co-Director for the Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health. Professor Rice studies the origins and development of depression and anxiety in young people and is interested in transition points such as the transition to secondary school and between adolescence and adult life.
Professor Anita Thapar (MBBCh 1985, PhD 1995) is a Clinical Professor who heads the academic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Section at Cardiff University. Professor Thapar's research focuses on youth depression, neurodevelopmental disorders/neurodivergence from 0 to 25 years.
The Host
This event is hosted by the Neuroscience and Mental Health Innovation Institute and will include stalls showcasing the range of mental health related research taking place across the University.

This event is intended to focus on the topic of young people’s mental health where Dr Alex George will present from a lived experience perspective and Professor Frances Rice and Professor Anita Thapar will help answer questions from a research and scientific perspective.
Due to the topic it is possible that sensitive issues may come up during the event. All registered attendees will receive a follow-up information sheet which outlines sources of mental health support. Your local GP is usually the first port of call for accessing mental health support through the NHS.
