About this Event

Capitalism reading group is a book club that wants to understand the system we all live in. To think about how that system controls our desires, motivations and the world around us. Led by Austin Furnas of Boxing Day Cafe and community member Dena Verhoff in association with Picture Book and HudCo in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

ABOUT THE BOOK

After 1989, capitalism has presented itself as the only realistic political economic system. What effects has this "capitalist realism" had on work, culture, education and mental health?

Is it possible to imagine an alternative to capitalism that is not some throwback to discredited models of state control?

DISCUSSION

Doesn't something feel profoundly wrong about the world? ... or is it going exactly as intended?

Why can we not confront the major crises of today?

From the climate catastrophe, income inequality, rise of fascism, housing crisis to lack of basic services and so many more.

Capitalism reading group is a book club that wants to understand the system we all live in. To think about how that system controls our desires, motivations and the world around us.

REVIEWS

"The beauty of Mark Fisher's laser sharp critique of the destructive effects of life under Neo-Liberalism was that it spoke to ordinary people in plain language that went beyond the often hermetic intellectual world of Academia. He is greatly missed. We need voices like Mark's more than ever." - Bobby Gillespie, Primal Scream

"A quick and entertaining read." Socialist Standard
"A provocative and necessary read...for anyone wanting to talk seriously about the politics of education today. " Times Higher Educational Supplement
