A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) follows Blanche DuBois, a troubled Southern woman who moves to New Orleans to live with her sister Stella after losing the family home. Blanche’s refined, illusion filled persona quickly clashes with Stella’s blunt and aggressive husband, Stanley Kowalski. As Stanley investigates Blanche’s past, he uncovers scandals that ruin her budding relationship with his friend Mitch. The growing conflict between Blanche and Stanley culminates in violence, and Blanche ultimately suffers a mental breakdown, ending the story as she is taken away to a mental institution, still clinging to her illusions.In partnership with the Mississippi Film Society, the Mississippi Museum of Art’s film series Capital Pictures returns with a celebration of the film adaptations of Mississippi dramatist, Tennessee Williams. Capital Pictures: Beguiled will explore William’s signature themes of sexuality, desire, and the weight of the past.
