About this Event
June is Black History Music Month. Canvas & Cadence is an immersive, interactive exhibition celebrating the legacy of Louisiana musicians and the powerful role Black music has played throughout history as a source of survival, resistance, healing, joy, and connection. The “cadence” of the exhibition represents the rhythm in which Black people have moved through generations from the coded movement and spiritual cadence of the Underground Railroad to the release, celebration, and emotional escape found inside juke joints, blues halls, second lines, and community gatherings.
Guests are invited to experience participatory stations throughout the exhibit, including music-inspired art installations, storytelling spaces, memory walls, protest poster creation, and opportunities to reflect on songs and artists that shaped their lives. Through visual art, sound, history, and community interaction, Canvas & Cadence honors the cultural heartbeat of Black music and the resilience woven into every rhythm.
