The World Heritage Site of Canterbury in Kent is home to some of the most historic (and best-known) buildings in Britain - from the ancient 6th Century St. Martin's Church to the towering Canterbury Cathedral.
It's not just the Cathedral though, there's the Roman Museum. See a whole range of artefacts and excavations, including a stunning Roman town house, complete with preserved mosaics.
If you're interested in British history, you're spoilt for choice. You can find a Roman city wall (rebuilt in the 14th Century), the oldest school in England (The King's School) and ancient preserved mosaics. Take the city wall trail and it will lead you past dozens of historic buildings and ruins.
Canterbury also offers a great range of modern attractions, from excellent shops and restaurants, to lively bars.
It's Easter weekend when we go. At the time of writing the Cathedral, the services for "Holy Saturday" haven't been announced yet, but in 2025 there was only a 9.15am Morning Prayer & 4.00pm Said Evening Prayer with Silence. Allowing plenty of time to visit the Cathedral whilst taking advantage of any additional Easter activities. You don't need to pre book your tickets but it may save you time if you do. See www.canterbury-cathedral.org for details.
