Yoga Nidra (“yogic sleep”) is a practice of guided meditation that promotes complete relaxation and transports students to the place that lies between wakefulness and sleep. This 90 minute class begins with a gentle Restorative Yin practice to support and lead students into the Yoga Nidra Meditation, which is a narrated rotation of consciousness through the subtle and vital nerve rich points of the body. This practice focuses our concentration and improves our ability to be in the moment.
By taking students into the parasympathetic part of the nervous system, Yoga Nidra helps to reduce the sympathetic “fight or flight response” of the brain and decrease the production of the stress-related hormone cortisol. As our mood improves, we return to a balanced place from which we can truly thrive. This meditative practice also boosts immunity, assisting us with healing stress-related ailments. Our lives can be full of stressors; Yoga Nidra helps us return to a place of calm. Through our practice, we learn how to distance ourselves from what is causing our stress and our patterned responses to it. Yoga Nidra also improves sleep patterns, by increasing our body’s natural supply of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. Practicing Yoga Nidra helps to cultivate our connection with our true self, enabling us to be more aware of our behavior and thought patterns, moving us from “reacting” to situations, to more mindfully “responding” in alignment with our authentic self.
This Sunday evening event is a great way to wind down your weekend, and ensure a blissful, restful night before the start of your busy week! Bolsters, blankets, and blocks are available for your use at the studio, but please feel free to bring your own favorite props, pillows, and blankets to ensure your total comfort.
