ABOUT US
The First Coast Dragons are NE Florida’s newest dragon boat team for breast cancer and all cancer survivors. Your first three paddles are free, and all equipment is provided. In addition to a beginner-level paddle on a dragon boat, you’ll do some light stretching activities, and enjoy lots of fun and socializing with other survivors and members of the Duval Dragons.
ABOUT DRAGON BOATING
A dragon boat is a large canoe with its origins in China, and each boat has room for either 10 or 20 paddlers, who sit in groups of two with a drummer at the front and a steersperson at the back. Competitive dragon boat racing is a growing phenomenon in the United States, with teams all across the country. The connection between dragon boating and breast cancer survivorship began in 1995, when Dr. Don Mackenzie started the first team in hopes of proving that survivors who had undergone lymph node removal could successfully engage in physical activity without causing lymphedema. That first team, called Abreast in a Boat, was wildly successful, and now there are dragon boat teams for breast cancer and all-cancer survivors nationally and internationally. Speed comes from the unity of the paddlers (NOT strength), making it a great entry-level activity for those who have been in treatment or are currently undergoing treatment.
FAQ
Q: What should I wear?
A: Anything that you’re comfortable moving in, ideally that dries quickly. We won’t go in the water, but you may get splashed. If you’re sensitive to the sun, wear light layers and remember a hat and sunblock! It’s unlikely that your shoes will get wet, but our paddlers often wear sandals or water shoes just in case.

Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: Just hydration and sun protection! We’ll provide all paddles and PFDs.

Q: How long will we be paddling for?
A: We will be on the water for approximately one hour, but we won't be paddling for the entire time. We’ll do a lot of short drills that illustrate the basics of the dragon boat paddle stroke, and will continuously paddle in short increments. If at any time you feel short of breath or need to take a break, you just pull your paddle in! The boat is a “no judgment” zone, and you’ll be surrounded by other survivors who “get it.”

Q: What if I’ve never paddled before?
A: A lot of the First Coast Dragons and Duval Dragons are still new paddlers, and we’ll show you everything you need to know. We don’t expect any experience paddling, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know.

Q: Do I need to commit to a membership if I come?
A: Not at all. We’re just excited to show our local survivor community how much fun dragon boating can be. If you feel like it’s not for you, that’s a-ok with us! You’re welcome to join us for social outings or craft days, or anything else we come up with!

Q: Where should I go for the event?
A: We are located at the Arlington Marina at 5137 Arlington Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32211. Parking is located either at the public boat ramp or in the grass immediately prior to the boat ramp at the corner of River Bluff Rd. and Arlington Rd.
Q: Can my spouse/caregiver/daughter/son/friend join me!
A: 100% yes! We are a team for survivors and their supporters, so bring your whole squad if you like!
