Can Vancouver Become an AI Film Production Center? The Impending Fall of LED Volume Walls and CGI VFX
When it first came out, many people were excited by LED Volume Virtual Production… until we found out the price tag. Do you know what’s happening with all the virtual production companies in China? They are all panicking because they see the writing on the wall: a crash is coming for LED-based virtual production. While virtual production services outside of China aren’t as concerned, it has been predicted that many will close down, as many are heavily leveraged. The cost of AI production can reduce the total cost of a project by as much as 80%, and it will suddenly happen to them.
Given this prediction, how does Vancouver become a real production hub for AI-enabled filmmaking? This in-person discussion series brings filmmakers and producers together to explore practical workflows for the next generation of green/grey-screen and AI-assisted production—where the physical shoot can happen in Vancouver while AI/VFX/coding work may happen elsewhere (including internationally).
This is not a coding meetup. It’s a think tank focused on real production questions: how the pipeline changes, what needs to be planned earlier, how to crew and budget intelligently, and how to integrate existing services into a coherent production approach.
It’s early days for AI production, but it is 100% coming. This is a discussion on frameworks and next-step thinking for film projects, and a discussion of whether Vancouver, which already has all the resources in the city, can become an AI production centre.
