For the first time in many years, all eyes are focused on not simply the exercise of presidential power, but on its scope and even its essence. Are we witnessing a Presidency as consequential as that of Franklin Delano Roosevelt almost a century ago? Is President Trump redefining or even revolutionizing the office? Are there limits on the office? How does the Trump administration's conception of executive power fit with those of Framers like Alexander Hamilton and James Madison? Is the administrative apparatus of government as we have understood it since the New Deal undergoing fundamental, and potentially permanent change? These are some of the questions we will consider in our January 13 Salon as we ask — "Can he really do that?"

Joseph Hartman is the Walter I. Giles Professor of the Practice in Constitutional Law in the Department of Government at Georgetown University, where he also serves as the Department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies and the Director of the Georgetown Summer Institute in Law and Practice. He teaches courses in American constitutional law, legal and political theory, and American government. Prior to his time in the academy he spent more than a decade as a litigation attorney in private practice with a large law firm in Washington, D.C. He earned his Ph.D. in Government from Georgetown in 2015, holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School (1999), and a B.A. in American Government from the University of Virginia (1996). His academic and intellectual interests focus on contemporary issues relating to public and constitutional law and theories of law.
